Plain English
-Aadarsh Ram
What is plain English? Is it necessary in this modern world? These questions may arise after looking at the topic. Yes, plain English is something that is so useful to the modern world. It is something that unites the rich and poor…strong and weak…and the literates. It is important that everyone precisely understands what one means, but however, if you are writing a drama, play or novel….plain English may not be useful.( No offense, Shakespeare)
It’s not just money and effort that are wasted by verbal confusion- it can cost lives. In 1977, the collision of two passenger aircraft at Tenerife airport left 583 dead and was largely caused by the misunderstanding of the phrase “take off”. Does a “field shelter” protect a field or keep rain off the cows? Does ” take him out!” order you to kill your enemy or go on a date with him? Sometimes, it really matters…
Guidelines:
– Make the average sentence length 15-20 words.
– Use words that are easily understandable.
– Prefer active voice over passive.
– Reduce cross- references.
– Write positive.
– Use good grammar.
– Avoid using noun strings
Using plain english really matters, and I’m not forcing you to use them. Unless everyone understands complicated language, better to use plain english.
