This wonderful short story of Sherlock Holmes is indeed a remarkable one that ends the series of Return of Sherlock Holmes.

The story starts with the Prime Minister and Right Honorable Trelawney Hope sitting in front of Holmes, completely grief stricken. A duly important letter of the government had been stolen from Lord Bellinger’s house and has alerted the Lord and Hope to take a charge to find the letter sooner as it might cause a war if placed in the wrong hands.

As Holmes start his investigations, he lists out people who could be obvious suspects. But as soon as he points out one person, a bad news approaches, that is the death of the poor suspect Holmes had suggested. Edwardo Lucas was his name. Lestrade, Holmes’ dear friend and police is put on the death case and he makes investigations finally approaching Holmes. But as investigations move further, the police had found that a deeply coloured stain on a carpet had been marked from the top to the bottom but a mark was not there on the floor right below. The mark rather was on another place on the floor…

Things get complicated as Holmes works on both the cases to find a solution. All he knew for sure was the two stains- one on the carpet and another on the floor.
